Women's shelters are not only places of refuge for women at risk, but also a special form of alternative housing. They give physical expression to the fight against domestic violence and for women's self-determination. At the same time, they give spatial expression to criticism of conservative housing construction. Women's shelters offer an alternative form of housing in which women can try out a communal lifestyle that deviates from normative family structures.
